3D trace elements on Mac?

Hi all,
I've always been using the 3D reduction scheme on Iolite installed on Windows, now I switched to Mac but I cannot see that?

If you open the iolite Python Console (in the Tools menu) there should be an error report printed when you click on the 3D Trace Elements DRS. If you start a new experiment, and click on the 3D Trace Elements DRS, can you please tell us what is printed in the Python Console?

Hi Agnese,

It would seem that you don't have the 3D Trace Elements files in your iolite folder.

To fix this, go to iolite's Preferences, and in the Paths section, click on the -> (arrow) button at the end of the Data Reduction Schemes path. This will open the folder where iolite looks for custom data reduction schemes (DRS) when it starts. You'll need to place the 3D Trace Elements files in there.

If there's nothing currently in that folder, you can just click the "Data reduction schemes" button in iolite's Preferences in the Advanced section. This will put the default 3D Trace Elements files into that location.

If you do have your own custom DRS files there already, you can download the latest 3D Trace Elements files from iolite's GitHub repo:

I had a similar problem but with a PC. I was able to restore the DRS paths and now have 3D trace elements back in the folder and enabled in iolite. However, it is now logging the error from the screenshot below:

eytan I had a similar problem before. When your pathways file is uploaded in a OneDrive it won't upload properly. Try setting the pathway to a folder outside OneDrive somewhere else on your computer with the DRS files. That worked for me.

There is a file called iolite_helpers.py that would normally sit in the site-packages folder in your iolite folder. That is the file mentioned in the error report you included. Typically the iolite folder is in your Documents folder, but sometimes (as mentioned by @DominicP ) OneDrive, or something similar may move this location (or make it not available etc).

In iolite's Preferences, in the Advanced section, there is a "Restore default files" section. If you click the Site Packages button (shown below), it should restore the iolite_helpers.py file.

If that doesn't work, please let us know.

Also, we have noted that these Paths issues are something we need to work on. We have a plan for keeping iolite's flexibility but avoiding most of these headaches for a future version!

Thank you for the suggestions @Bence and @DominicP . I ended up moving the folder containing all the iolite software packages etc. into a local place on the PC. I also restored default paths for the site packages (and all other paths) but now have a new logged error that says iolite couldn't find iolite_helper. I think that it was somehow removed from the site packages folder. This is a PC that my research group uses so it could have been a mistake by someone. I reinstalled iolite4 and the python scripts are still not where they should be, though iolite appears to be looking in the wrong place for it based on the error message and the Path preferences. Maybe there is somewhere I can redownload it, or redirect iolite to look?

If your installation has been messed up as it appears from the error messages, you can try the instructions shown here: https://forum.iolite.xyz/d/201-3d-trace-elements-drs-webinar-recording/8 starting from where Joe writes "Alternatively...."

If you re-run the wizard that runs the first time you start iolite, you should be able to put all those files back in the correct places. Just make sure that when the wizard asks you where to put the iolite folder that you select your Documents folder. If you already have an iolite folder in that location, you may want to rename it to something like iolite_old.

If, after running the "firstRun wizard", you are still having troubles please let us know.
