What is the need of using multiple Zircon standards ( Z_91500, Z_Plesovice, and Z_Temora2) in U Pb zircon geochronology? We are only having Z_91500 standard in our lab. Is it necessary to use multiple zircon standards? Can you please suggest some literature for this query?

Hi Devaprasad,

The other zircon standards are included for quality assurance. If you only have your primary standard and your samples, you have little evidence that nothing has gone wrong. By including a couple of secondary reference materials (commonly Plesoviche and Temora 2 in our lab), you have some confidence that everything is working correctly, as the secondary reference materials are treated exactly like your samples.

I hope that helps. Sorry, I don't have a reference for this practice to hand, but perhaps someone else can suggest a good starting point?

During 37:55 minutes of that webinar, you mentioned to reset after unchecking the automatic fit of the smooth cubic spline. I couldn't find any option like that in iolite version 4.3.4. I am not able to get the best fit as in the webinar using cubic spline (Using example file). The right part of iolite window in the webinar is not visible because video tabs are hiding. Can you help in this regard?

Hi Devaprasad,

Sorry, I didn't realise that part was obscured. You can see it better at 32m48s in the video.

At 37m55s, I'm setting the spline Equation to Smoothed Cubic Spline, unchecking the Automatic Fit checkbox, and then reducing the fit parameter a to be just less than 1 (₀.98 I think from memory).

I was mostly doing this to show the effect of manually adjusting fits, and I thinking if you look at the secondary reference material results with a smoothed cubic spline vs the default Exponential fit, there is very little difference.
